Top 5 Apps / CE Capabilities for 2010

... as predicted by YOU!

I set a challenge, to respond in 3 sentences or less with an answer to the following question:

What will be the most important/innovative app or CE capability that will migrate successfully to the in-car environment in 2010 to enhance and transform the consumer experience, and why?

I received a lot of interest in the competition, which is not surprising as there was a complimentary Gold pass to The Consumer Telematics Show up for grabs!

I am sure you're curious to see what the industry as a whole are predicting will be rocking the CE and consumer telematics space in 2010.

So, without further ado… Here is a quick run down of the runners up and winning answer (the winner has secured a free Gold Pass to CTS 2010).

#5. The integration of Internet radio into cars is the most fundamental change in in-car audio entertainment since the introduction of tape and CD players over 25 years ago. It will deliver an explosion of consumer choice and control, fundamentally enhancing the driving experience virtually every time the consumer drives their car.

#4. The killer app will be augmented reality on the windshield. Because the only way to delivery location related advertisement is AR on the window with navigation guidance. You can find out the benefits from the iPhone Yelp application.

#3. Call it Tivo for cars. The same car companies that have in-vehicle TVs in the back seats (for kids etc.) will feature ability to “store” movies, cartoons etc. and/or have them streamed in real time. This will transform the in-vehicle experience as passengers will actually look forward to traveling and see it as a chance to stay entertained, kept informed.

#2. Text to speech engines. The recent rash of high visibility accidents, expanding distracted driver regulations, and growth of teen drivers who use texting instead of voice as their primary means of communications, will all collide (no pun intended) in 2010. The solution will be solved through advancements and deeper vehicle integration of next generation text to speech engines that can modify a textual based communications paradigm into a safer mobile environment.

*Winner of the free Gold Pass to the Consumer Telematics Show, 2010*
#1.
Ability to associate my Unlimited Data Plan from my ESN or SIM for my Blackberry or iPhone to my car and other WWAN devices so I do not incur any incremental cost except when I go over my plans 5GB limit. Carrier is limiting growth via concept of 1 rate plan per ESN or SIM on Data. A “Family” plan similar to voice today is needed to connect more limited use devices.

As you can see by the range of answers above, 2010 will see a whole host of innovation and development in this space.  To be a part of the industry discussion from the outset and make your future strategies more robust, secure your place at CTS 2010 today.
